Belondrade y Lurton 2019

€ 42,95

Goudgele, frisse, complexe, uitgebalanceerde wijn.

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 92 punten: The current vintage for the 'grand vin' is the 2015 Belondrade y Lurton, from the earliest harvest in the winery, cropped from a very warm and dry year. Their 36 hectares of vineyards are organically farmed and certified since 2009, and the different plots are fermented independently with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrel until blending in the month of June. It's very young and very fruit-driven, with the oak in the background and in a very subtle way, with clean aromas, and I'd say good Verdejo typicity. The palate is very pleasant, with a soft texture and again that pleasant light bitterness in the finish, nicely balanced by very good acidity. In fact, this 2015 has a little bit less alcohol and a little more acidity than the 2014. These wines are clearly much more interesting two to three years after the harvest, even if they can be drunk early, as they reach maturity and more complexity in a good couple of years after bottling. This is a warm vintage, but with good freshness. 98,500 bottles were produced in 2015. The wine was bottled in August 2016. I tasted the latest wines with Didier Belondrade, his son Jean and winemaker Marta Baquerizo. I saw good Verdejo typicity, in fact I had forgotten about that slightly bitter finish of the grape.

Rueda

The Wine Advocate: "The nose is really exuberant, very perfumed, very Verdejo, very fresh, open and expressive, with aromas of lilies, aromatic herbs (lavender), fennel, rhubarb and a hint of orange peel; the oak is in the background, much better integrated than in the old times. The palate is very fresh, lively, vibrant, with some citric flavors reminiscent of grapefruit, talcum powder and aromatic herbs; it has with good length and balance. This has the potential to have a long life in bottle."

Parker punten 93 van Robert Parker voor jaargang 2013: "2013 was not an easy harvest in Rueda, but those that worked well in their vineyards and were able to harvest early (by hand and sorting the grapes), the result is often a fresh wine. For those that worked well, 2013 could be similar to 2007, which not coincidentally, is my favorite vintage at Belondrade. However, they had to sort and discard lots of grapes (around 10%) for this 2013 Belondrade y Lurton. The nose is really exuberant, very perfumed, very Verdejo, very fresh, open and expressive, with aromas of lilies, aromatic herbs (lavender), fennel, rhubarb and a hint of orange peel; the oak is in the background, much better integrated than in the old times. The palate is very fresh, lively, vibrant (in general there is no malo, but as they use natural yeasts if a barrel starts doing malo they do not stop it) with some citric flavors reminiscent of grapefruit, talcum powder and aromatic herbs; it has with good length and balance. This has the potential to have a long life in bottle, especially in large formats. As a reference, I tasted the 2010 which is aging nicely and developing balsamic aromas that reminded me of some aged Cavas. As some new vineyards had come into production for Belondrade (as a general rule the vines have to be around ten years old and they have to see the potential in the must), the total volume was around the same as in previous vintages, as in 2013 there were 92,000 bottles produced. Frenchman Didier Belondrade is one of the main exponents of Rueda with his oak-fermented Belondrade y Lurton. He has now been joined in the winery by his son Jean, mainly for the sales part. They also produced a Rosé Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, Quinta Clarisa. I visited them at the end of August and they were about to start harvesting, so 2015 would be their earliest harvest to date. 2014 was being bottled when I visited and I did not get to taste it. Against all odds, the 2013 is turning to be one of the better vintages for their top wine, Belondrade y Lurton, a vintage that might be in line with the 2007 -- one of their best (if not the best) vintages ever."

James Suckling over de 2012: "A simple Rueda showing ripe and sweet yellow fruit on the nose and palate. White flowers and almonds too. Full and round with medium acidity and a sweet, fruity finish. Drink now."
